If you could only plant one flower, what would it be?

I am planting a garden and looking for suggestions, but I want to know what you like too.

Please give me the names of some plants that are very pretty, colorful, and not too much greenery or stalks.

So to sum up, your fav and some that fit what I described.

If you could only plant one flower, what would it be?
hibiscus is the nicest. tropical and there are some that are cold hardy to subzero but die to the groung until summer

Canna lilies have great folage and large blooms when in direct light. there are varieties with different color flowers than orange. they are bulbs that die after first frost and come up in the spring.

Calla lilies are also nice and sightly more cold hardy.

Camellias are great flowers for the spring and some varieties flower in the summer as well

azaleas only flower in the spring and fall, but are hard to miss when in flower.

birds of paradise have lots of foilage and very few flowers, but it is very exotic, but not very cold hardy
Reply:Sorry, my memory is bad to keep up with flower names. But one thing I can tell you is that my yard started blooming at the middle of march with spring bulb flowers called Crocus (they come out even when the grounds are still frozen, this is unbelievable to see) and I had flowers coming out until the month of December (it even snowed over them).

Try getting plants that come back every year. Get different blooming months periods for your flowers. Mine started blooming in March and with all the different types of flowers I planted I was able to enjoy bloomings across three seasons (almost touched 4 seasons) I really enjoyed my garden this year.
Reply:wow only one flower ... i have a few... in recent years I'm fond of cosmos.. they have soft ferny foliage .. and seem to bloom constantly....

fine I'm breaking the rules here a little.. zinnias are good too for a fast flower.. Im in zone 5

there are some many choices... cone flowers.. are pretty. columbines are nice and a millions choices to choose from in that species alone.. . Black eye Susan's ( not that daisy like ones ) but the more vine type . they can come in yellow /pink and white .. i think i can keep going here..;)

Good luck with your garden !
Reply:Pansies. It is so darn depressing with our long winters in central MN that I really look forward to these. They only need part sun, too and come in a lot of colors and look good with rocks around them.
Reply:I grow lots of perennials and annuals. Perennials -- my favorite stemless flower is my pink oxalis. Hard to find, but well worth it. Most you find are "shamrocks" or white ones but my pink ones have good green foliage most of the year and are always covered with pink blooms and tolerant of shade, heat, drought, anything. Annuals-- I'd say the best overall are petunias for ease of growth, lack of pests and good beauty. French marigolds are great too, but red spider infests them easily at times. Good luck-- now is the time to hit the seed company websites and order catelogs. Park Seed Co is the best, in my book.

Reply:I don't know where you live so I don't know a good suggestion for you but I live in Texas and I would have to pick a summer and winter flower. Lantanas are beautiful and come in all colors and sizes and bloom profusely from spring to fall and then pansies because they bloom fall to spring.
Reply:orchid
Reply:shasta daisy. They pretty, colorful, not too tall, easy to care for, and what there is of greenery on a shasta daisy is very dark and glossy, and you will have blooms all season. They are also a perinnal, and the clump about doubles in size every year with no real care. Just plant them in a sunny place where they get a fair amount of water, and they will cheer you up with out being any hassle at all.
Reply:Zinnia...long blooming, good looking, great varieties and hardy also make for good cut flowers for the house!!!
Reply:Something that blooms all season as a potentila or a moss rose or a California poppy. The bees really like the moss roses, petunias bloom all season
Reply:sweet pea...
Reply:Balsam. They are large and colorful. Not too many ppl are familiar with them. They need direct sun part of the day.
Reply:Stella d'oro daylilies.....beautiful yellow flowers that blossom all summer long.....plants spread quickly and within a few years will need to be separated....easily done, carefully dig up the plant and either cut with a very large knife or a shovel and replant. They grow best in full sun and usually get about 12-18" high......I recently found the same plant, but with purple flowers.....the color difference is striking when placed near each other....
Reply:I would say roses in the back and salvia and corieopsis in the front of them and allysum in the very front.

There are so many variations with perennials i dont think you could go wrong with them.

I like David Austin roses for there ability to be matched with any other flower arrangment in the garden.
Reply:I would grow a sunflower or a rose.
