I am looking for the correct name of an annual spring flower called something like annocrous?

Maybe it's anemone or crocus?

In my garden the crocus is one of the first flowers to appear in the spring. It come up every year, so it's not an annual but a perennial. Some anemones like Anemone blanda (Greek Windflower) zone 4-8 are perennials, but Anemone coronaria (Poppy Anemone) is hardy only to zone 8-11...so it's an annual in other zones:

Reply:Well this is a spring flowering perennial: aubretia - low lying and spreads, in purples, blues, pinks.

Can't think of anything else except Aquilegea.

How to know the name of a flower by just showing its picture?

To memorize the appearance of all flowers.



I have a great deal of plant knowledge, and am still stumped sometimes. I find that by doing progressively tighter internet searches using keywords about the flowers appearance I can generally find my unknown flower on the internet within a matter of minutes if not faster.

When you buy flower from store, there is always a bag of powder attached to the wrapper. It uses to keep the flower stay alive and fresh longer. I am wodering what is that powder made of ? If you know it's chemical name that will be great ! Thanks !

Short answer: Bactericide, acidic additive and sugar



Long answer:

The function of a floral preservative is to lengthen the life of a cut flower. There are many commercially prepared floral preservatives such as Floralife, Bloomlife, Petallife, Roselife, Everbloom and S-O Preservative. Floral preservatives generally contain a sugar, a bactericide, and something to make the water acidic. They usually come as a measured amount of powder in a small packet, designed to put into a quart of water.



Sugar is included to provide a good energy source for the flower. The final sugar concentration in the water mixed with the floral preservative is usually in the range of 1/2 to 2%.



Unfortunately, sugar is also a good energy source for undesirable bacteria and fungi to grow in the water. These can build up in the water and clog the water-conducting vessels in the flower, which shortens its life. For this reason a bactericide must be included in a floral preservative. One of the more common bactericides is called 8-HQS although a chlorine compound may also work well. It is important to use a substance that prevents the growth of bacteria but is not toxic to the plant.



Floral preservatives also include something that will make the water more acidic. Acidic water discourages the growth of microorganisms and helps to increase the life of the flowers.

How can I find the name of my thornless rose bush from just the description of the flower?

The flowers start off cream colored, but as they age, they get almost deep ruby red to pink streaks and pink coloring in the petals. New growth is a deep ruby red, and it is definitely nearly 99% thornless. My bush is over five feet tall, and almost as wide. If anyone wants more details, and thinks they have an answer, I can also email them a picture of both the shrub and the flowers at their different stages.

Unfortunately finding a name of any rose is quite difficult because there are sooooo many. But with some luck, you may get lucky!



Your best bet is to:

a) post a picture here and see what results you get,

b) contact your local rose garden club and see if they can help,

c) post a picture at the gardenweb forum and see what results you get (www.gardenweb.com go to forums, garden web galleries, name that plant...),

d) contacting some rose nurseries (try www.ashdownroses.com, www.heirloomroses.com, www.antiqueroseemporium.com)



It would help if you knew about the rose...How old is it? Did you plant it? Does it have a scent? Do you know what type of rose it is...Things like that.

Reply:One of the prettiest velvet looking flower I know is the hoya carnosa. It also has a plastic looking center star with a single drop of crystal clear nectar. Do a web search and see for yourself.
