Does anybody noe a flower which is like celery?if you put a stalk of celery in a blue liquid,it will turn blue

is there any white flowers which are like that?or is it all flowers have this "ability" to do it?if so,please name a few of them (3 to 5).and state whether they are cheap or expensive and whether they are easy to be found in Singapore.

Thank you very much! :)

Does anybody noe a flower which is like celery?if you put a stalk of celery in a blue liquid,it will turn blue
Any white flower should do this. It is simply the water being taken into the flowers vascular system.

Try:

Carnation

Rose

Daisy - haven't tried this one myself.
Reply:Sea grapes and Durian flowers are white and might take up color if put in water with a stong concentration of food coloring. Chinese Crepe Myrtle is pink, but you could try putting it in laundry bluing to see if you could make it turn purple. Golden Penda blooms are yellow, but if you put them in bluing or red food coloring to see what happens. In the US I've always used Queen Anne's Lace (wild carrot) to do this, as it grows wild everywhere and takes up color easily. It might grow where you live, but I can't find any references.
Reply:White Frangipani,Hibiscus, costas,Bangkok rose, these are all edible and should be everywhere in the tropics.I cant help you on price though. A walk around your fantastic and famous gardens should help alot I would think..
Reply:Carnations do that. They are inexpensive in America. I don't know about Singapore.

I think there are different types of vinca, some are also called periwinkle and are more of a groundcover with purple flowers, and then there are types sold as annual flowers and are in more colors, pinks, whites, etc, and some have that strip down the petal like in the picture. All vinca have 5 petal flowers.

What do you think of my friend's poem?

It's kind of in the middle of a larger poem, but tell me what you think

To the white sand I may speak a name, fertile

Albeit in a stranger tongue. Tree names, flower names

Deliberate, gainsay death's brittle cript. Meanwhile

The wind that knots itself in one great death--

Coils and withdraws. So syllables want breath.

  • What is the name of a flower formed of multiple small flowers that are rose & yellow, it's found in many parks

More than likely it's a Lantana. There are several varieties in different colors, but the pink/yellow/white combo is probably the most common. It grows like a weed here in Texas but usually dies back after the first frost and returns from roots/seeds in the spring.

This site has some good info and a picture.

What is the name of a flower formed of multiple small flowers that are rose %26amp; yellow, it's found in many parks
Certainly could be Lantana but there is also a variety of Yarrow that is yellow with pink edges, very pretty.

If the leaf of the plant is soft and fern-like, it's probably yarrow, if the leaf is kind of oval shaped, it's probably lantana.

Name the smallest flower ever to be found in the history of the world and India.?

The smallest known flowering plants are in the genus Wolffia, which float on the surface of quiet streams and ponds. The entire plant—flower and all—is less than a millimeter long. A bouquet of a dozen could fit on the head of a pin.

The smallest flower is known as duckweed. It is completely microscopic and is found only in wet marsh lands.

Is it okay if your husband calls other women personal names or am I just being paranoid?

I am uncomfortable with my husband calling other woman names like flower and petal to me its not right as I would not do it for me only my husband will have that priveledge, I guess it also has to do with the trust issues that have arisen again after he lied about something concerning his ex-girlfriend, did'nt expect it to happen after we got married, and after I worked so hard to put the past behind me and regain my trust in him. well other people call me names like love or babe or sugar but I don't do the same, I believe that you can still be nice minus the pet naming calling, just to add to it the woman that calls him sugar plum happens to be a flirtatious thing, I just think he should'nt be encouraging her, as much as he claims its nothing really,it could lead to something which I just could'nt deal with, cos I know how certain woman can be, it really depends on who you use personal names with i guess.Well for me it has always been about him. So am I just being paranoid?

Is it okay if your husband calls other women personal names or am I just being paranoid?
im the same i dont like my partner callin women names like honey or luv,i think it should be a personal thing and i only should be called them names, and some of the women he calls them names are flirtatious too,it annoys me and my blood boils, while some people might think its no harm,i hate it.your not bein paranoid,i feel the same.................x
Reply:I don't think you are being paranoid, it natural to feel a bit jealous. I wouldn't like it if my husband called any other woman honey or sweetheart, they are names for me only.

Actually, he usually calls most other women Doris!!
Reply:Sounds like your husband is a flirt. Respect is earned and given. Its never taken or forced. If he respects you tell him your loosing what respect you have for him. This might just make him consider his actions and treat you with the respect you deserve.
Reply:Your still worried about the past and you havent regained trust in him. The little pet names are a bit much if he loves you he would stop.
Reply:If this is really upsetting you, then he should respect your feelings %26amp; stop doing it. It's a small thing, but would give you peace of mind - so explain that to him. Then ask him nicely if he'll stop doing it. If he doesn't, you know there's a big problem, because then it's not just about him calling other women pet names, it's then about that he doesn't care how you feel in the situation.

Am I making sense? It's very longwinded, but anyway, good luck with this!
Reply:no i dont think what hes doin is ok..if my husband even thought that i would prob. have a cow..i would just tell him that it makes you mad and theres no reason for him to talk to them like that..i think thats just very disrespectful of him and if he gets upset with you after you tell him how you feel then that could be serious he should respect how it makes you feel ya know..
    Reply:yes its ok
Reply:Not sure thats hard to say.I guess if it was me and a girl was calling my man names,I would confront her also and tell her there is no need for it.I wouldnt deal with it.And talk to him about it tell him it makes you feel uncomfortable.
Reply:I understand what you are saying. Did he just start doing this or has he always done it but now it just bothers you? As for him not encouraging that flirtatious thing, I'd agree with that too. Because an affair usually starts as "oh it's nothing". I don't want to freak you out by saying that but it's mostly true. I don't know what went on with his ex girlfriend and I'm not saying you are wrong either but go back over the incident and see if maybe your insecurities did help kick that into over drive. I don't know what he did and he my have been out of line but check your own motives first.

He sounds like he's willing to work on things so maybe some counseling is in order. Because he's your husband and it is, to a certain degree, his responsibility to help you through this. But don't sit and stew in things, move on from the pet name thing for now.

Just let things be for a while before you talk to him again, and try not to hold a grudge or punish him in some way. Like withholding sex, or something. Good Luck.

Reply:Once trust has been violated, if the person is truly, truly, truly remorseful the violator will do whatever is necessary to regain it. If the perpetrator is continuing the behavior which led to the cheating, lying, etc., the old saying is replayed in your head, once a cheater always a cheater. That is resonated in your mind along with his actions.

So, no you are not being paranoid, hubby is not doing all he can to regain your trust and seems to not really care as long as his ego is being stroked by these flirtatious hos and biatches. If it bothers you, regardless, whether its innocent blah blah, your hubby should stop it. He is disrespecting you, otherwise.

Oh, boy. Well, I think each flower shop may have their own way of taking care of flowers, so don't study up. Show willingness to learn how to do it the boss's way, and I think that's enough.

If I were you, I'd be very good at IDENTIFYING flowers, though. Stop by the flower shop a day or so before your interview, and take a good look at the flowers. You can get a book about flowers from the library, or try looking at a florist's website (like FTD florists). If your flower shop sells houseplants, take a look at those, too.

Good luck, and I hope you get the job!

Reply:Florists work in flower shops and they prepare arrangements that are either delivered individually, prepared for weddings, etc. If you don't know how to arrange flowers you will probably do other jobs and you can learn about flowers/plants as you do your job. They may just be looking for a responsible, hard working, reliable person so project that in your interview.

You would be best to be honest with those interviewing you, you can't learn all about flowers and plants on here. Cut flowers are used alot such as carnations and roses. Plants just need TLC.

i would have to go with either jasmine, daffodil, rose, or lilac. they are all such beautiful flowers(but then again, how many flower aren't beautiful?) and i think that they would make great and original names. each of them has a specific aroma and different texture. they are all unique just like everyone of us. they are also some of my favorite flowers and even the names seem to intoxicate even without the smell. hope this is what you wanted to know. which flower would you pick?

Bindweed. It grows everywhere in the UK It has large white flowers often clambering up fences and walls. As kids we used to pick the flowers and chant a little rhyme then press the bottom of the flower and it pops out, we used to call them grannys petticoat.

If they are about 1-2" wide, then I would say you have a Calibrachoa. These are sometimes called mini petunias and come in a variety of colors.

    http://provenwinners.com/plants/default....

If they are 3-4" or more in width, then I would say you have a Petunia. Again, they are available in a wide variety of colors and recent breeding has given us some really great trailing ones.

    http://provenwinners.com/plants/default....

Check out the links to compare flowers. Since there are so many varieties of each one, I cannot say for certain which one you have. My guess would be the Surfinia 'Mini Mini Purple' from the surfinia.com link. Also keep in mind that new ones come out every year and the old ones get replaced by them. So, it can be hard to find the exact one if the plant is a few years old.

Is it best if this generation ceased naming their children Old traditional English names that are EveryWhere?

    How about this:

    GEM STONES

    Flowers

    Places

    Songs

    Birds

    Trees, Plants, Animals

    Colors

    Themes?

Is it best if this generation ceased naming their children Old traditional English names that are EveryWhere?
in my culture, (Cree native) we use an honorific that suits mainstream culture as a given name to go with our legally registered surname ... privately, we are often known by our "spirit name" or 'real name" or "Cree name" and publicly we may be known by a nickname that describes something bout who we are or what we do so yeah

Names are important. I think what you said makes a lot of sense in a way, you just want to do it in a way that suits your cultural values and helps you make your way through your life's journey in peace and be respected for who and what you are
Reply:actually so many kids have these weird names I breathe a sigh of relief when babies are called real names how would you feel going through life called daffodil or something stupid, i think I know a baby named after evey catagory you have mentioned, judge for yourself flowers autumn Lily,Poppy,Bluebell, places, Bradford, Carlisle and Douglas. songs Patience[Take that] Angel[from Robbie Williams] birds Robin ,Wren, trees Willow colours Indigo Scarlet, Violet,Ebony and Gem stones Sapphire and Ruby.
Reply:I like unique names myself. I agree with you. I grew up one of many w/ my first name and I hated it.
Reply:no, the old traditional names are easier on the child because

everyone knows how to spell them and What they are and

buying stuff that has names on it , you can find it.

and the other names are really to far out for regular people.
Reply:Songs? Well, I was going to name my child "Disco Inferno," but it didn't go with our last name.
Reply:It seems that every generation tries to name their babies something special. These days, 'special' seems to mean unusual, quirky, or with an edge. Really, will the child be happier being named "Unique" or "Danger" or "Kahlua"? At the very least he or she will deal with countless questions about how the name is pronounced or spelled, along with "why did your parents name you that?" At this stage, you can't know what your baby's personality will be like so why saddle them with a difficult name which they might later hate?

One reason the old fashioned "normal" names persist is that they are easy to understand, often easy to spell and usually are clearly meant for a boy or a girl--no guessing games! I hope new parents will give serious thought to how easy or difficult they will make their child's life by naming them something offbeat. They will carry that name at least until age 18 when they can legally change it, if they can afford to do so.
Reply:No. Names are names. If you make up something and give it to a child as a name, that child will face ridicule growing up. Traditional names are better.
Reply:In the USA, many people have largely abandoned "traditional" names in favor of "unique" names or creative spellings of regular names. Everyone is in such a hurry to be unique that they are rapidly making changing "unique" back into "identical".

Some of it is mildly amusing and moderately creative.

On the other hand, my daughter used to go to school with a girl named "Te Quila", which I am afraid will haunt that poor child through her adulthood.

Best? I know that things happen the way they are going to happen. I don't know that "best" ever has anything to do with it...
Reply:you can name a child whatever you want as long as it doesn't have a hidden meaning or sound like an insult. My daughter's name is Autumn.
Reply:Sorry, I disagree. I don't particularly like children named after cities, states, foods, parts of the body etc. To each her own!
Reply:It depends on the name! I mean different people like different names. Why do you think we all have different names?Because our parents like different names!
Reply:Yes, I agree not because I feel I have to, because I myself like those types of names. Names that speak when you say them, names that tell a story.

Looking for the name of a flower...?

    jessenia-meaning flower(arabic)

    parisa-meaning angelic face, fairy like(persian)

    celina-meaning moon in arabic

which sounds best and would be most popular?

Which one of these baby names is best?
    I like Celina, very pretty.
Reply:I LOVE Parisa, it's so pretty. It's different but not weird. My second choice would be Celina.
Reply:if you don't want her to be prejudiced against, I'd suggest a name like Jane
    Reply:How about Bob.
Reply:I really like the name Jessenia!!
    Reply:Parisa............because I love fairy's very pretty name I think.
Reply:I Say Parisa Its A Very Rare Name And I Love The Meaning It Sure Describes Me
    Reply:celina is pretty
Reply:jessenia and celina are nice... im not too sure i like parisa
Reply:dont you want a name that WONT be too popular(no mix ups in class). n e ways...i think PARISA is the best i dont think anyone in her generation would have that name....?
Reply:Celina (at least it doesn't sound foreign)
    Reply:Parisa
Reply:I like Jessenia and Parisa. I think a name should have a good meaning, but maybe they should hold off on the actual picking till she is born. I find people like they're names better if it fits they're personality. Hope this helps.

But of the two I think Jessenia is cuter and more serene.
Reply:Celina... suits a gal belongin to most cultures %26amp; religions! congrats on havin a baby sis! take gud care of her! all the best!
Reply:I like Jessenia. It is a beautiful name and your little sister will be as delicate as a flower. The name Jessenia flows freely from my lips. It has a melodic and feminine sound to it, and an added bonus is that it is different. I don't know of anyone named Jessenia.
Reply:if i was i child, i think i would much rather live with the name celina. THINK ABOUT THE BABY!!
Reply:OMG, I like Celina. I'm gonna use that name for my baby girl. :)
    Reply:jessenina sounds best to me.

all of them end with ahh.

    humm. explore other options too.
Reply:I got to help name both my younger sisters. either Jessinia or Parisa, Celina is to common and mainstream. A unique name will always be remembered, especially on a resume. Plus when shes older she can go by Jess, or Paris....
Reply:Celina sounds better, and is more popular
    Reply:parisa....celina sounds too common.
Reply:wait...YOURE having a baby sister?....hows that happen!?!are you sure your moms not having it?
Reply:Very modern sounding names....i thought muslims would prefer traditional type names....of all, I alike Pairsa best but actually prefer a more local type name like something starting with "sha..."

    Good luck !
Reply:They are all beautiful names. If you're going for most popular, Celina would probably be the most likely to be popular. If you would rather have a unique name that bunches of other children won't have, I would choose Parisa. Any of the three you choose will be lovely! Enjoy your baby sister!

(My baby sister is 27 now, and her name is Melissa; I picked that one, too!)
    Reply:jessenia veryyyy pretty
Reply:I'm fond of Celina. but another beautiful name is Ahlam. I have a friend named Ahlam ... I just think it's very ethnic and unique.

Just remember that naming a baby is permanent and that it should be something that you like and are happy with. Just go with your gut. ;)
Reply:Parisa. It will remind people of Paris, and it has special meaning for your family/heritage.
Reply:Preferably Jessenia but Parisa is also a lovely one, by the way don't choose a very popular and hackneyed name.
Reply:Parichehr is nice Persian name which means angel face, Parirokh (same meaning) and Parizaad (angel born) .... don't select a damn Arabic name (if you're really Persian) ...
Reply:They are all beautiful names... i prefer jessenia!

I really like the way it sounds!!!

Good Luck %26amp; Congratulations on your new sister!!!

Can anyone tell me where the purple flower called "pattisons curse" or Salvation jane got its name from. thanx

In western australia it is considered a weed and called "pattersons curse" but in other states of australia its know as salvation jane because live stock can eat it although im told it provides very little nutrients

im curious to see if anyone knows the origins of the names

Can anyone tell me where the purple flower called "pattisons curse" or Salvation jane got its name from. thanx
Patterson's Curse or Paterson's Curse (Echium plantagineum) is an invasive annual plant native to the area surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, but best known in Australia, where it is also known as Salvation Jane (particularly in South Australia). Other names are Blueweed, Lady Campbell Weed or Riverina Bluebell.

In the 1880s it was introduced to Australia, probably both as an accidental contaminate of pasture seed and as an ornamental plant. It is said that the name derives from the bitter experience of the Paterson or Patterson family, early settlers of the country near Albury. They had the first seeds brought from Europe to beautify their garden, and then could only watch helplessly as the weed infested previously productive pastures for many miles around. more at link below.

    Kitten names?

I'm getting two new kittens, and I need some name ideas. We don't know if they are boys or girls yet, so I'm going to need both male and female names.

One of the kittens is black and brown mulit-colored, and the other is orange.

I really like the names Flower and Hazel for girls, and maybe Cocoa for a male for the brown and black one.

But I need more ideas. Thanks! :D

    Kitten names?
There is like a 99% chance that the blk/brn multi is a female. If it is the name (Spicy) would be cute as their fur tends to look like a bunch of spices and nearly all of that particular breed develope "spicy attitudes" as they get older, lol.

Orange tabbies are 99% males. A cute name for him would be Charlie or Mylo.

Good luck with your new babies and I hope that I have helped .
Reply:for a brown/black girl Nutmeg, Cookie, for a boy Fudge or Bumble.

for a red girl Sahara, Clementine (as in the type of orange fruit) and for a boy Cranberry.

But, I do like your choices of Cocoa and Hazel :)

Whatever names you choose, you'll have tons of fun with them playing and cuddling I'm sure :)
Reply:If the orange one is a boy I think O.J. would be cute since orange juice is orange!

Some orange cat girl names: Pumpkin, Pumpkin-Pie, or Tabby!

Some black cat boy names: Smokey, Twilight, Coffee, or Ash.

Some black cat girl names: Cookie, Coffee, or Hazel, like you said. (I like that one)!!!!!!!

Can someone help me identify this flower?
I believe your flower is a lily.

Lilium, the genus, is the Latin form of the Greek word 'Lerion' for the Madonna Lily. Red lily was first described by the famous Swedish botanist Carl von Linne (Linnaeus) in 1753.

Lilies are one of the most beautiful, and graceful of all summer-blooming flowers.

Lilies belong to the Lilium genus consisting of less than 100 known species, occurring in all parts of the Northern Hemisphere.

Lilies are believed to have been under cultivation longer than any other ornamental flower, having existed in gardens 3,000 years ago. Floral designs, particularly of Lilies, made their appearance and became very popular in the 18th dynasty of Egypt.

Oh and they also come in many different colores.

My favorate is the Pink Stargazer lily.

The name of a flower starting with the letters c l a?

More info would help if you are trying to track down something you saw. I'm guessing Clematis also though. It is pronounced as if it were an A .It is a perennial flowering vine with a multitude of cultivars, each having striking, sometimes large, star pattern blooms. Colors vary but frequently fall from whites, pinks dark violets, variegated versions of those colors and more. Found across a huge zonal section, Clematis frequently draw admiration as well as inquiries into the name. That's my 2 cents...

  • Is there a flower or rose called "friendship" or something similar?

I want to give one of my friends a rose/plant for her birthday and wanted it to have a name that says how special she is.

have been looking through garden websites and can't find anything, but wondered if anyone out there knows of a suitable one.

Is there a flower or rose called "friendship" or something similar?
    never heard of it
Reply:Yes, however ONLY THE Chrisian ROZEN CRUCer Martin not the St of Turin has the secret to getting a transplant to naturalize a synthetic environ.

Most decent Groceries of a certain size have a floral DEPt. and in the Geographic I call HOME there are mini rose planters suitable for indoor or even Kitchen garden.

The girl's name Columbine is of Latin origin, and its meaning is "dove." Columbine is also a literary character who appears in traditional Italian comedy and English pantomime as Harlequin's beloved. Also a flower name for a delicate two-colored blossom. The boy's and girl's name Columba is of Latin origin, and its meaning is "dove." Saint Columba, sixth-century Irish saint, founded an influential monastery on the Scottish island of Iona, and is supposed to have exorcised the River Ness of a monster. Though the Irish Columba was a man, two other saints of that name were both women. The dove is a Christian symbol for the Holy Spirit. Columba has 5 variant forms: Collie, Colly, Colombe, Columbia and Columbine.

Turn your 'num lock' on, hold down the 'alt' key and type in '3' (on your right- hand side numbers, NOT the ones across the top otherwise it won't work). If you experiment with the numbers then you can find loads of different symbols.

Do when people give really unique names to their kids?

I am not crazy about it, especcially weird spelling or flowers and stuff.

Do when people give really unique names to their kids?
Truly unique names are fine as long as they are not so stupid that you want to smack the parents with a brick. I would like to have a name that people would say when they hear it, "Oh wow! That's a neat name." And I wouldn't have to spell it for them.
    Reply:Hi there.

In the book "Freakonomics" by Stephen Leavitt, famed economist, he has 2 whole chapters breaking down this phenomenon. It is apparently a stong economic indicator, that the vast majority of people given bizarre or bizarrely spelt names are from lower class underachieving groups and will repeat the pattern themselves.

Successful people feel no need to try and make their children "special" in this way.

Interesting stuff and a great book to read.

    Cheers, Steve.
Reply:Our names were followed from our grandparent's name to immortalize their names through generations. So I have three first cousins having my same name taken from my grandmother's name on my father's side.
Reply:Well my name is Isabella Paris Séan July (15), which some consider unique but I'm used to it so to me it's normal!! Isabella and Paris are because my mom and daddy liked them and Séan is my granny's middle name and my great great grandad's first name. and I was born in July. My big bro is called Cody Jake Maxwell (aged 18)and my big sis is called Katie Ruby Oonagh (16), so out of the 3 of us I'd think you'd agree in saying my name is the most unique!
Reply:I like them but sometimes they're hard to pronounce.
Reply:I only want uniqe names for my kids. Why give you child a name that 6 other kids in there classroom will have??? My 1st sons name is after his father ENTRIC and the son i am prgnant with now is gonna be Meshach (from the bible) I do this because I love the names and you wont find many people (or any) with the same name. My name is Tyffannie I am very glad my mother chose to spell it different. It is unique and beautiful.
Reply:I think it's odd at times, but it can be good also. But in 20 years there will be no more Saras or Jennifers.!.!. My children have names that I chose because I liked them, not b/c they were "cool" or b/c someone else liked them.
Reply:Why just look at my question and you will know the answer. My son's name is Kamdor Ninjor.
Reply:I like some unique but "real" names, like Corrigan (boys' name meaning spear carrier) or Ailish (Irish form of Elizabeth). I don't like names like Destiny, Chastity, Miley (my heart goes out to any girl who has to bear that name!), etc. I knew kids named Tapioca, Envy, Utmost (a boy), Pretty and Precious. Yes, those were their legal names. It makes me wonder what profession the parents of Precious expect her to have - a doctor, or a cocktail waitress?
Reply:I like unique names, but not weird names. I like names that u don't hear often, not names that will get the kid teased. I'm naming my baby girl Amari (ah-MAH-ree) b/c I don't know anyone else personally with that name. I understand where ur coming from with the weird spellings though. I hate when people use uneccesary apostrophes.
Reply:I don't have any problem with it as long as the name does not fall into the following categories:

    1) obviously made up. Random letters strung together, apostrophes and the like added.

    2) taking a word and spelling it backwards. This gives it a reverse meaning. Example being Nevaeh.

    3) outlandish spellings to change the gender or to be unique. For example, Erryk as a girl's name or Jennaphyr.

    4) anything that requires an explanation or it having to be continually pronounced and the spelling corrected for everyone who comes across it (teachers, doctors, employers, etc).

As far as the idiotic names that celebs give their kids, I figure no one is actually interacting with them in the real world so they can live in their own little bubble.
Reply:yes but only when they spell it how its actually pronounced. like for example im naming my child Chloe but if i spelled it Klowe it would be hard to pronounce and absolutely ridiculously spelled.

Can I get into the Chelsea Flower Show with someone elses ticket although their name is on the ticket?

Don't know about the Chelsey Flower Show but for events like concerts, they print the name of the person ordering them, so if a person orders for multiple people, all the tickets will have the first person's name on it and I doubt they'll make trouble for that. Just as long as you're holding a valid ticket, it shouldn't be a problem.

Hibiscus is both the common and botanical name.

It's also the state flower of Hawaii.

The common hibiscus is believed to be from China, as the botanical name suggests. It's Hibiscus rosa-sinensis

What's the name of that flower,?
i think it' the rose of Jericho,if you place it in a saucer of water it opens take it out and it closes,it's actually a dead part of a plant the water act's on the dry fibres and makes them expand when they dry out they contract ,the same as a pine cone

Why do some Thai people who name their children English names want to give them animal names??? My mom's?

nickname for my sister and I is "Dog". We knew Thai people who named their children stuff like "Tiger" and "Bunny". Also one was named after a flower "Tulip" These were their birth names! Luckily, our mother did not subject us to this public humiliation. She usually only calls us "Dog" in private.

Why do some Thai people who name their children English names want to give them animal names??? My mom's?
I'm Thai and normally parents will not give "dog" to their child. I think they called you "Puppy" or "Luk Mah" (Thai language)
Reply:It's nothing offensive. It had been the custom of Thai parents to give nicknames to their children that were derived from names of objects, animals, insects, flowers, things. I guess it's the same as the way the American Indians of the old West gave names to their children (Big Bear, Starlight, Roaring Thunder, etc).

So, it is normal for Thais to have nicknames like Pet (Duck), Tao (Turtle), Oot (Camel), Chom-poo (Pink), Dao (Star), Fah (Sky), Mot (Ant), Taeng-mo (Watermelon), Pooh (Crab), Maew (Cat), Gai (Chicken), Fon (Rain).

But of course in the Western culture, it is offensive and demeaning to call someone a pig, dog, snake, or a chicken.

    Strange, huh?.
Reply:My cousin named his son Golf since he loves playing golf. and its not a nickname.
Reply:but most thai-language nicknames mean the same sorts of things:

    Gai = chicken

    Pom = hair

    Noi or Lek = Little

    Som = orange

    Nok = bird

    etc etc
Reply:Because proper first names in Thailand tend to be long and/or are uniquely meaningful and "official" - they are no the type of words people will use on a day to day basis to call each other in a household. That is why "cute" nicknames are given and are used in the family or close friends. It is NOT a humiliation on parents part. They are not used to belittle the kids.

Even word like Ouan (fat) - is not used to as a way of name calling or bullying like western culture of today. Sometimes, these names are even used as "opposite" characteristics - I have known people called Lek (small) but in fact they are tall and solid or Ouan (fat) when the person is quite thin.

Even if other people know your nickname - if it is convenient, it will still be used - BUT in a respectful way. For instance - my nick name is Ngaw (the sound that a cat makes - in Thai) - my relatives call me Phi Ngaw - because I am older- and Phi is used for an older brother or sister (or cousins). Whereas - the workers in my aunty's office will call me Khun Ngaw - as in "Mister" Ngaw. It is more convenient and less formal than calling me by my proper name (which I am not going t divulge here - as you will not be able to pronounce it and it is rather long)

The point I am making is - the nicknames are NOT seen as "humiliations" or degrading . It's just a name to call someone.
Reply:A Thai family I know called their son Heartbeat, Hart for short. Others have names like Gop (frog) Moo (pig) Nok (bird).

Thai peaple have an official name as well as a nick name that they are Known to all by.

When Thai people in my area ( not sure if this is nation wide ) become parents, they become Known as Mother of.......... or father of..........their first born
Reply:Giving nicknames to Thai children from young is an old tradition that stemmed from the belief that evil spirits are present everywhere and are on the lookout to take away beautiful babies from their parents. Hence the parents will give their children beautiful names but will instead call them by their nicknames so as to divert these evil spirits from going after their children. In fact the uglier the nicknames, the safer it was to be for the babies. Hence all Thais have a nickname given at birth, besides their own names.
Reply:I give proper names for my 3 children. And their nicknames are Gorilla, Baboon and Chimp.
Reply:You are not the only one raising the question re use of English names as nick names. The discussion is ongoing, but of course nobody is able to provide clear cut answers.

There was a big article in New York Times on August 29th. The article is now in archive, so I can only show exerpt

America has Tom, Dick and Harry. Thailand has Pig, Money and Fat. For as long as people here can remember, children have been given playful nicknames -- classics include Shrimp, Chubby and Crab -- that are carried into adulthood. But now, to the consternation of some nickname purists, children ..... With help from language experts at the Royal Institute, the official arbiter of the Thai language, Mr. Vira plans to produce by the end of the year a collection of thousands of old-fashioned nicknames, listed by such wholesome categories as colors, animals and fruit and including simple favorites like Yaay (big), Ouan (fat) and Dam (black). Published in a small booklet, the names will be distributed to the news media and libraries, and posted on the Internet

And as translated and summarized from Puchatkarn, August 30, 2007 ...

Culture Minister Khunying Khaisri Sriaroon said the ministry would carry out His Majesty the King's suggestion to promote better usage of the Thai language. The ministry will collaborate with other ministries, including the Education and Foreign Affairs ministries, in a campaign to promote the Thai language, clothing and lifestyle among both Thai people inside and outside the country. The minister admitted the campaign might be difficult as Thailand is an open country.
Reply:the way i understand it pet names are never meant as an insult, the thai perception of a pig isn't the same as a western one and dog (or puppy as someone has said) isn't a gross insult like in islamic countries. My friends call me moo bin(flying pig) or chang nam (hippo).....I think good old fashioned tongue in cheek humour is fantastic and our differences and frailties should be celebrated

Ive never heard of anyone called kwai before though
Reply:I'm not a Thia person, but my mom called me Godzilla.
    Reply:why not ask your parents.
Reply:N is right, you should ask you parents!

But anyways, I've never heard anybody calling their children 'dog,' that not right.

Still, as for other English names, they don't know any so anything English will do, or they think it sounds cool, but truthfully to anyone speaking English as a native language, its like WTF?!?!
